SAT Test
Acronym for Scholastic Assessment Test, SAT is a mandatory exam to get undergraduate admission into any college of USA. The SAT is developed and administered by the USA-based 'College Entrance Examination Board'. This implies that College board sets the questions, conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. SAT is similar to ACT (America College Test). SAT and ACT exams are different exams but the intention of the test is same. High school juniors and seniors take the SAT exam. SAT exam is updated in March 2005. The new test is a measure of the critical thinking skills of each student for the academic success in their under graduation program. SAT exam is conducted seven times a year.
  • There are two SAT exams namely SAT I and SAT II. SAT I is structured as a reasoning test that basically tests candidate's verbal, mathematical and reasoning abilities. SAT II is a subject test; to test the candidate's knowledge of specific subject opted by the candidate. SAT exam is more of multiple choice questions based. Some schools or colleges expect students to clear more subject tests.
  • Candidates may either take the SAT reasoning test or up to three SAT subject tests on the given test date. Candidates wishing to take the test may register online, by mail, or by telephone, at least three weeks before the test date. Many U.S. universities use tests such as the SAT and the ACT as a way of assessing students coming from schools using different grade, class and division system. Nearly every college in USA accept SAT score to admit students. More than two million students across the world take SAT exam every year.

SAT Preparation

Here are some useful SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) Preparation Tips

  • Start your preparations well in advance of the scheduled date of the SAT test. Having ample time for the preparation before the actual schedule of the test is important. This reduces the final moment anxiety and help you take the exam in a relaxed state of mind.
  • As soon as the junior school course gets completed, take the subject tests of SAT. This is because, at that time, the subject content will be fresh in your mind. Get the right counseling from your subject teachers or counselors.
  • Downloading the SAT subject tests preparation booklet, which includes sample questions and instructions will help you prepare for the tests in the right direction.
  • There are various resources available to help your SAT preparation process. Internet provides best access to test study guides and practice tests that will help you prepare well. Apart from Internet there are many SAT mock test preparation centers where you can register and take many practice tests possible.
  • Time management is very important in SAT. Questions in SAT are arranged in ascending order of difficulty except the Critical Reading Section. Try to solve simple questions first and go on to tougher ones later.

SAT Score

A good SAT score certainly increase your chances of admission in one of the better colleges of USA. However, a good score of SAT is not the 'only' criteria for admission. Different elements like your "high school record" and several other issues are taken into account for deciding your admission. In addition to all these, various schools and colleges follow their own procedures while admitting students. Therefore, it is important to read the instructions outlined by the colleges.

Your SAT score is not the direct marks graded for your answers but it is the percentile score. Admission officers use different tools in addition to a good SAT score as admission ceiteria to reduce the heavy competition of admissions. Some schools give weightage to personal motivation of the candidates. So, be aware of the SAT details and be motivated towards your goal.

Your Subject score is reported on a scale of 200 to 800. The essay part will be evaluated in different manner. Two readers will read the essay and they award the score on the scale of 1 to 6. So, sometimes a high scorer in SAT looses the admission by not having scored well in essay part in select schools. Generally a SAT score of about 500 in Mathematics, 500 in writing skills and 500 in critical reading is good to secure admission in a better college. For best college admission, the scores generally should be more than 500 from each section of SAT. A good SAT score will also help you in seeking scholarships and financial aids for the entire study program.

MCAT Test
MCAT is a mandatory exam to get admissions in undergraduate courses in the U.S medical schools. Along with the other additional admission factors, Medical school admission team considers MCAT score as a primary factor in admitting the aspirants. Abbreviated for Medical College Admission Test, MCAT is based on MCQs (Multiple choice Questions) to test the problem solving, critical thinking, writing and science knowledge skills of the medical aspirants. Many of the medical schools do not consider the MCAT score, if the medical aspirants took the exam more than three years back. Read further to know some useful aspects of MCAT exam.
  • MCAT is conducted twice a year by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Council) in April and August. The test is conducted in 40 different versions on the test date for exam safety purposes.
  • MCAT consists of four parts: Verbal Reasoning, Problems from Physical Sciences, Writing Samples and Biological Problems including Organic Chemistry.
  • MCAT student manual can give sample questions of MCAT exam and other MCAT related information to the aspirants.
  • Except the Writing sample section, each section of MCAT is given a score in the scale of 1 to 15. Retaking MCAT is offered to candidates. But it is advisable not to retake MCAT exam, as there is lesser chance of scoring with prominent difference. The reason being, both your performances will be taken for consideration after taking the average of the two.
  • MCAT will basically test the knowledge of your medical school pre-requisite courses and human physiology. MCAT will not test your Mathematics knowledge.
  • Although MCAT is conducted twice a year, better give the test when you feel well prepared. MCAT will be introduced to the aspirants as MCAT-CBT (Computer Based Test) from the year 2007.

MCAT Preparation

Start preparing for your MCAT well in advance (at least 3 months before the test date). Make a time-table of your MCAT preparation schedule and try to stick to it. This will make your MCAT preparation more organized and planned. Start your preparation with introductory biology, chemistry, physics and organic courses step by step. Simultaneously prepare short notes of whatever you understood. This will help you when you revise the course outline before the MCAT test. Try to understand the basic concepts rather than memorizing them. Here are some useful MCAT preparation tips.
  • The verbal reasoning section tests your understanding of concepts rather than memorization of details. The Physical Sciences section is generally a scoring section. A good practice of the entire syllabus of Physical and General Chemistry before the MCAT exam, would help you immensely in scoring well in this section. Try to cover-up very common topics like Work-Energy, Newtonian Mechanics, electrochemistry and acid/base chemistry thoroughly. For the biological sciences section topics such as general reaction mechanisms, physiology and cell biology are important and concentrate well in these topics.
  • Writing sample section has two essays to write. The ability of candidates to effectively present their thoughts is tested. Two readers will evaluate the essays and sometimes there may be a third reader also. Therefore, convincing the target audience by effectively presenting your views is very important. Keep in mind that your written communication skills are the only factor to be evaluated through your essays. The topics generally are not related to medical subjects.

MCAT Score

A good MCAT score certainly would pave way for admission into a good Medical school, but it is not the one and only decisive factor for securing admission in best of the medical schools in USA. Most of the medical school admission committees take your MCAT scores and GPA together to determine a point total for you. Read further on MCAT score.
  • Some of these calculations look at your science GPA with the science sections of the MCAT, while your non-science or overall GPA may be linked with your Verbal Reasoning score. Each individual medical school has a different system, but many of these link your MCAT scores in a multiplicative way with your GPA. This has very important proposition. As you know, it is very difficult to raise your GPA to a significant degree in a short period of time. However, you can significantly raise your MCAT scores, and hence your "average points" on your admissions analysis by intensive MCAT preparation over a short period of time.
  • Each section of MCAT receives its own score. Verbal Reasoning, Biological Sciences, and Physical Sciences are each scored on a scale ranging from 1 to 15. Medical schools will receive these scaled scores as your MCAT scores. In addition to your scaled scores, your score report will reflect the national mean score for each section, standard deviations, national scoring profiles for each section, and your percentile ranking.
  • Your sample essays will be scored alphabetically on a scale ranging from J to T, with T as the highest. The average scaled score for each Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences section is approximately 8. The average scaled score for the writing sample is N. You will need scores between 10 and 11 to be considered competitive by most of the U.S medical schools. And if you are aiming for the top medical schools, your goals should be 12 and above.
  • Usually, MCAT scores are valid for 3 years, but this varies from school to school. So it is advisable to contact the schools of your choice to find out their guidelines and policies of MCAT scores and admission.

GRE Test
The Graduate Record Examination is a Standardized test that measures verbal, mathematical and analytical skills. It is intended to help the graduate schools (other than business schools) assess the potential of applicants for advanced study. The GRE Test is developed and administered by the US-based "Educational Testing Service" (ETS) under the direction of the Graduate Record Examination Board , a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide.

GRE test is conducted in two categories - General GRE test and Subject GRE test. General GRE test is conducted all-round-the-year. Unlike other exams, you can choose your own date and time for taking the GRE Test. The test is administered in the five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the high season for GRE Test, so in case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register very early (say 2-3 months in advance) to get a date of your choice.

Anyone is eligible to appear in GRE General test. There are no restrictions based on age or qualifications. The test scores are valid for five years, i.e., most universities accept scores up to five years old.

The GRE Subject test is meant to assess candidate's qualification in a specific field of study. It is required mainly for Doctoral Study in the US and is also required by some universities for Masters Level programs. GRE Subject test is a written test and not a computer test like the General GRE test. It is held thrice a year

The test is available in eight different areas:
1. Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology
2. Biology
3. Chemistry
4. Computer Science
5. Literature in English
6. Mathematics
7. Physics
8. Psychology

GRE Preparation

GRE exam requires a minimum of three months of focused preparation. Practice is the key to get a good score in GRE. There are many GRE test preparation centers where the candidate can register and take Mock GRE tests to get a feel of the exam.

A good score in GRE is not the 'only criteria' of getting admission in the graduate school. Different schools follow different formula in weighing GRE scores to admit the candidates in the schools. For example some schools give more weightage to writing skills of the candidate in specific topic in addition to good GRE score. Keeping this fact in your mind, you need to perform well in all the sections of GRE exam.

Almost all the schools give high weightage to 'Analytical writing' section of GRE exam. Hence, do not ignore the writing part of the test, though you may be good in Verbal and Quantitative Section.

Avoid guesswork in your answers. GRE-CAT is designed in such a way that a candidate cannot 'revert' or 'return back' to a question like paper-version exams. So when the candidate clicks on the 'click-box' that will be his or her final answer. So, avoiding guesswork will always put you on safer side.

Avoid wasting time on answering single question or getting stuck-up with specific question for more time. If you don't know the answer of a particular question, move on to the next question.

Plan your preparation schedule and stick to the plan without any excuses. Consistency in preparation and regular practice is the key to success. Have faith in your ability and do not loose your cool at any moment.

GRE Test Pattern

GRE General test checks the fundamental skills-Reasoning and Comprehension included-and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study. The test has three distinct sections : Quantitative Section, Verbal Section and Analytical Writing Assessment Section.

Quantitative Section: This section contains 28 questions on Mathematics that are to be completed in 45 minutes. This difficulty level of questions is comparable to Class X. Major topics include Number Systems, Percentages, Fractions & Decimals, Algebra (including Quadratic Equations), Geometry (including Basic Coordinate Geometry), Ratio & Proportion, Area & Volume of 2-D and 3-D figures, and Probability.

Verbal Section: This section contains 30 questions to be attempted in 30 minutes. The verbal section requires a good vocabulary level, and basic skills of grammatically correct English coupled with reasoning and analysis. The questions consist of four types : Antonyms, Analogies, Sentence Completion, and Reading Comprehension. The four types are intermingled, with no fixed number for each type.

Analytical Writing Assessment: The writing assessment section requires you to write two short essays. The first is the Issue task, in which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. For the Issue task, you will be able to choose 1 of 2 essay topics selected by the computer from the pool of topics. The time allotted is 45 minutes.

The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated. The Argument task does not offer a choice of topics; the computer will present you with a single topic selected from the topic pool. The time allotted is 30 minutes.

GRE Score

The GRE Test is only one of several parameters which the graduate schools look at to determine the selection of an applicant. A high GRE score alone does not translate into an admission offer from a great school. But the test can be looked upon as the first major hurdle to be cleared in the process of getting admission into a Graduate school of your choice.

The GRE Test is developed and administered by the US-based "Educational Testing Service" (ETS). ETS has the provision of reporting your GRE scores to a maximum of four universities of your choice, the cost of which is built into the fee you pay. You have to indicate the four universities where you wish a copy of your GRE score to be sent.

The GRE Test results comprise four different scores: a total score, and separate scores for Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing Assessment sections. The total score is reported out of 1600 and the sectional scores are out of 800. The Writing Assessment section is scored separately on 6.

The standard scores for the Verbal Section and Quantitative Sections are about 470 and 570 respectively. Scoring in Analytical Writing Assessment part is not predictable and there are no standard measures. Two readers will read each essay written by you, who will be authors or professors hired to judge your writing skills. Essays are judged for their over all impact.

In addition to these scores, the score report also contains percents (%) below. These "% below" indicate the percentage of examinees who scored below you based on the scores of the entire GRE testing population for the most recent three-year period. These percentages are important in considering how an applicant for admission to a particular management school compares with everyone in the specified period, with all other applicants to the same school, and with students already enrolled at the school.

LSAT Test
LSAT (Law School Admission Test) exam is mandatory for getting admission in those Law Schools of USA, which are approved by ABA (American Bar Association). LSAT is also compulsory for getting admission in Law courses in most of the Canadian Law Schools and many of the non-ABA approved Law Schools too. LSAT is conducted four times a year at selected centers all over the world. LSAT helps Law Schools make sound admission decisions by providing standard measure of verbal and reasoning skills of the students. The Law schools can use LSAT score as one among the few other features in evaluating the candidates for admission.

A prospective law student may be from any of academic backgrounds, ethnic cluster and cultures. The LSAT precisely comprise of five sections namely,
  • Reading comprehension section.
  • Logical reasoning (arguments) section.
  • Analytical reasoning (games) section.
  • Experimental section (another Arguments, Games, or Reading Comprehension).
  • Essay section or writing sample section.
The Experimental section will be games, arguments, or reading section. You will not know which is the real section and which is the experimental one, so you must just try your best on every single section. The good news is that if at some point you have a strangely difficult section that makes no sense, there's a strong chance that it was the experimental section. There is also a writing sample or essay section. The writing sample does not count towards your score, but the law schools to which you apply will receive a copy of your essay to evaluate. The duration of the test is about 3.5 hours. There is no negative marking as such, but you are expected to attend all the questions. After your test is graded, your score will be converted into an LSAT score ranging from a low of 120 to a high of 180. Your score and hence your percentile will roughly follow along a bell curve pattern, a score of 150 is an average one, and 170 is the 99th percentile.

LSAT Preparation

Practice is the key to getting a good score in LSAT. As games or puzzle section is the 'scoring section', start your preparation for solving puzzles by purchasing good magazines or books. Generally, these games or puzzles are intended to assess the logical, analytical and reading comprehension skills of the candidates. Many of the questions have diagrams also, and hence practice more to solve different types of puzzle questions to increase your speed.
  • Register yourself in one of the LSAT mock-test centers and give as many mock tests as possible. This will help you in assessing your strengths and weaknesses and instill the necessary confidence in you to face the exam. After assessing your weaknesses start working on them. Simply speaking, LSAT doesn't test academic knowledge, it is more a test of Logical reasoning and reading comprehension ability of the candidates.
  • Subject knowledge will help you make your speed faster in the reading comprehension sections. Attending classes for LSAT preparation in an organized way for minimum of two months is advisable. Don't spend too much time on any particular question. If you are stuck on any particular question, leave it and move on to the next one.

LSAT Score

LSAT score is measured on the scale of 120 to180. Although the average LSAT score is about 150, to get admission into any of the top law schools, a score of 160 and above is required. There is no passing score in LSAT. Different law schools make different cutoff for admission into their schools. Get informed about all these basic information either by reading through the brochure of the school or through the official website of the particular law school. In addition to a good LSAT score, most of the law schools follow different criteria for admitting the candidates.

A good GPA (Graded Point Average) and a good LSAT score is required for admission in some schools. Some schools weigh LSAT and GPA in the ratio 70:30 or 75:25 etc, for the admission. The other admission factors like references, application essays also count in some schools. The application essays are not necessarily reflective of the academic ability and personality of the aspirant. Many admission consulting programs help students in writing essays. In addition, admissions departments do not have enough staff to read all the application essays. If your LSAT score and GPA are far below the norm, your application essay may never even be read. LSAT is a test that can give you definite success and you can increase your score by 20 or 30 percentile, if you learn the ideal approach and devote ample time during preparation.

IELTS Test
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a test of English language proficiency. IELTS is mandatory exam for admission into universities, secondary, vocational and training programs in the countries of England, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. It has become a mandatory test for students of many nationalities to get student visas to Australia. IELTS is however not accepted by most universities in USA. TOEFL is required for study there..

The test has different sections:
  • The Listening Section - Duration : 30 minutes
  • Academic reading/general training reading section - Duration : 60 minutes
  • Academic writing/general training writing section - Duration : 60 minutes
  • Speaking Section : Duration : 11 - 14 minutes
  • Total test time : 2 hours and 45 minutes
All Aspirants are supposed to take the Listening and Speaking modules and the choice of Reading and Writing modules of IELTS is determined by the purpose of taking IELTS.

The Academic reading and writing modules are suitable for those seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. General training reading and writing modules are suitable for candidates who are going to English-speaking countries to complete their secondary education or to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level. The General training modules are also used for immigration purposes.

IELTS assesses a candidate on a band scale of one to nine. Band one indicates that you have virtually no knowledge of English. Band nine indicates that your English proficiency is as good as that of a native English speaker. Universities in Australia, England etc, typically require a band score of 6 and more.

IELTS Preparation

Start preparing for IELTS test well in advance before the test date. The IELTS test comprises of four Band Modules namely Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All these four modules carry the same weightage. Hence give equal importance to all the modules of IELTS in your preparation.
  • The first and foremost thing to do for your IELTS preparation is to buy Cambridge's IELTS material, relevant cassettes, CD-ROMs and books.
  • Reading Section is relatively difficult section of IELTS. Practice the reading exercises given in the book and self-evaluate your score. Try to complete the reading exercises with in the stipulated time. Time management is of essence in IELTS. You can also enhance your reading skills practice by reading good English magazines and newspaper articles.
  • Make your study-plan to set goals for completing the course outline. Do not think that stretching your study time is the only solution to get prepared well for your IELTS exam. Concentrate on your quality time instead of quantity time.
  • If you have ample time before your IELTS exam, identify your weaker points and give importance to those weaker points. Work on your weaker areas concentrate on your strong points to make them stronger.
  • These days, many IELTS resources are available to help you practice well. Become familiar with the exact pattern of the test of the test. You can achieve this by more test practices. If it is possible, attend a short-term course for IELTS preparation, which will help you to compare your mock IELTS score with other candidates.

IELTS Score

A good IELTS score is mandatory for admission in the universities of UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Apart from a good IELTS score Universities also expect a good GPA (Grade Point Average) from the students from their past education.

You will receive a separate Band Score for each section. The four Band Scores, one for each section are added together and averaged for an Overall Band Score. Each Band has a statement giving a summary of the English at that level. There are nine Band levels, from one (non-user) to nine (expert user).

The minimum score accepted for a course ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, depending upon courses and institutes you are applying to. The most common requirement is a band score of 6 to 6.5.

Overall IELTS band scores and Listening and Reading IELTS band scores are reported in half bands. Writing and Speaking band scores are reported in whole bands. This feature helps the Universities in following their guidelines at the time of admission.

Test Reports have a validity of two years. You can retake the test if you do not achieve the desired score but not before three months from the first test date.

GMAT Test

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a Standardized test that measures verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills. GMAT helps business schools in assessing the potential of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Nearly 900 management institutes all over the world (almost all of them in the US) give admission in the MBA program on the basis of GMAT scores.

The GMAT test is developed and administered by the US-based Pearson VUE under the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. For the conduct of the test, Pearson VUE has appointed testing centers in various countries.

GMAT test is held all-round-the-year. You can choose your own date and time for taking the GMAT. The test is administered five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the high season for GMAT. In case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register quite early (say 2-3 months advance) to get a date of your choice. Otherwise, registering at least 15 days in advance is mandatory.

Anyone is eligible to appear in GMAT. There are no restrictions based on age or qualifications. The test scores are valid for five years, i.e., most universities accept scores up to five years old.

GMAT Preparation

Take minimum of three full months of focused preparation before your scheduled GMAT. Those who are not in continuous touch with subjects or out of school or college for long time are advised to take not less than six months for a good preparation. As such no recognized or accredited Institutes are available for GMAT preparation. However, several private institutes offer short term courses for GMAT preparation. These institutes offer two different types of courses for GMAT preparation. One is GMAT online course and the other is GMAT classroom course. Online courses are best for those who cannot attend classroom courses for some reasons.

Those who are opting for classroom course for GMAT preparation must check whether the institute has provision for GMAT-CAT (GMAT Computer Adaptive Test) version of training. GMAT requires "good speed" of solving the questions and hence whenever you are taking the Mock-GMAT test during your preparations, make your first 'objective' to complete it in given time-slot.

Here are some useful tips for cracking the GMAT exams.
  • Read the questions carefully as questions in GMAT are generally designed to confuse the candidates. As many of the questions of GMAT exam can be misinterpreted either from the 'language point of view' or from the 'content point of view', reading the questions carefully to get the exact meaning of the questions will be of great help to score good marks.
  • Avoid guesswork in your answers. GMAT-CAT is designed in such a way that a candidate cannot 'revert' or 'return back' to a question like paper-version exams. So when the candidate clicks on the 'click-box' that will be his or her final answer. So, avoiding guesswork will always put you on safer side.
  • Avoid wasting time on answering single question or getting stuck-up with specific question for more time. If you don't know the answer of a particular question, move on to the next question.

GMAT Test Pattern

The GMAT tests the fundamental skills-Reasoning and Comprehension included-and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study. The test has three distinct sections : Analytical Writing Ability (AWA), Quantitative, and Verbal. The Quantitative section has two types of questions, Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency, mingled throughout the section. The Verbal Section has three types : Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning, and Reading Comprehension; here too, the questions of each type appear in no set sequence. There are a total of 78 questions, 37 in Quantitative and 41 in Verbal. These have to be done in 75 minutes each.

The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated. For both the essays, the emphasis is on the "Analytical" part, and not on the "Writing" part.

Quantitative Section: The 37 questions in this section comprise two kinds of questions : Problem Solving (PS) and Data Sufficiency (DS). This section contains questions on Mathematics. The difficulty level of the questions is comparable to Class X.

Verbal Section: The verbal section in GMAT test requires the basic skills of English coupled with reasoning and analysis. The 41 questions, to be attempted in 75 minutes, consist of three types : Sentence Correction (SC), Critical Reasoning (CR), and Reading Comprehension (RC). The three types are intermingled, with no fixed number for each type.

GMAT Score

The GMAT test is only one of several parameters which the graduate schools look at to determine the selection of an applicant. A high score alone does not translate into an admission offer from a great school. But the test can be looked upon as the first major hurdle to be cleared in the process of getting admission into a B-school of your choice. A good score will push your candidature to the top, by projecting you as a candidate with good verbal and analytical talents, which are the important base of aspirants to pursue education in Management field. Apart from a good score, many of the top Schools and Universities look for other features like past academic records, your application essays, recommendation letters from your past Institutes or Universities.

The test is scored out of 800 (in multiples of 10), and most scores fall in the range of 500-600. However, a score of even 800 is not unheard of! An average GMAT score that is necessary for getting admission is 680 and more. Different schools follow different criteria to judge the ability of the students. There are schools who have rejected students with scores of even more than 700. This is because some students fail in their presentation ability of application essay writing etc., though they performed well in the GMAT. So to qualify for admission, apart from good GMAT score you are expected to do well in other areas of consideration also.

Many B-Schools admit students with higher scores only and many of them take students with average score also. Aspirants must know about other criteria (like evaluation of their essays etc.) of admission that the respective schools consider. Waiving application fees for some exceptional students is a normal situation that happens with good GMAT scorers, in many of the B-Schools. GMAT in recent years is conducted as CAT (Computer Adaptive Test). The highlight of this procedure is, the candidates get their GMAT-CAT scores on the same day they give the test.

TOEFL Test
TOEFL or "Test Of English as a Foreign Language" is a mandatory entrance exam to get admission in various university and colleges, particularly in USA. In addition to college admissions, many of the government bodies, licensing and certification agencies also use TOEFL scores to evaluate command over English language of people whose native language is not English. Among all international English language exams, TOEFL is the best-known exam.

TOEFL Exam can be given in three different formats
  • CBT (Computer Based Testing)
  • iBT (Internet Based Testing)
  • PBT (Paper Based Testing)
In the Computer Based TOEFL Testing, the computer itself selects questions of some sections, from a pool of questions that are classified by difficulty and content. The computer, based on how well the candidate answers his previous questions, selects the questions. The Internet Based TOEFL Testing will be delivered through Internet. The Paper Based TOEFL Exam is a conventional paper based type, which measures, Listening Comprehension, Structure, Written Expression and Reading Comprehension of the candidate.

Primarily, TOEFL-CBT test has four sections, all of which are mandatory. Listening section measures the ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America. This section tests comprehension of main ideas, supporting ideas, important details, and inferences. The candidate will both see and hear the questions before the answer choices appear. Structure section measures the ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English. The language tested is formal, rather than conversational. When topics have a national context, they refer to United States or Canadian history, culture, art, or literature. However, knowledge of these contexts is not required to answer the questions. Reading section measures the ability to understand short passage similar in topic and style to academic texts used in North American colleges and universities. The candidate will have to read a variety of short passages on academic subjects and answer several questions about each passage. Writing section measures the ability to write in English on an assigned topic. The candidate must compose an essay.

TOEFL Preparation

TOEFL assesses your command over the English language through different sections such as reading, listening, and essay writing.

  • Every Institute or college fixes up a cutoff TOEFL score for the admission. Better know about cutoff score details before you apply to the respective college or Institute. These days TOEFL is conducted as Computer Based Testing in almost all the countries except few. Hence make yourself conversant with computer. It's not necessary that you need to be a computer expert technically, but your working knowledge of Computers will help you give your exam comfortably. Generally, people who comfortably speak understand and write the English language should have no difficulty in scoring good points.
  • Start your TOEFL preparations at least two months before the exams. As reading skills can give you good score points, start reading some good famous novels, renowned English magazines and news papers to get the feel of the language. Watch English news from any of the good English channels. Watching good English movies regularly will enhance your listening skills to help you score well in listening part of TOEFL test. Practice writing essays on as many topics as possible under examination environment. Every essay has to be completed in 30 minutes. You will get a topic allotted and then you have to express your view, giving opinion, arguments or something like this. The topics will be simple and no special knowledge is needed. In the essays, you may be required to deal with everyday problems or questions.
  • There are good TOEFL books, guides and CD-ROMs available in the market to help you for the test preparation. But before following these preparatory materials better consult reliable mock TOEFL test centers and counselors to advise you in the right direction.

TOEFL Score

Each independent US school or institute or university fixes up cutoff TOEFL score for the admission. Be an observant of this fact, when you apply for different schools either by reading the brochures of the respective institutes or through the official or any other reliable websites of the institute.

The TOEFL score is the result of your understanding level of the English language. Mainly, the university you're applying to wants to know that you know enough English to understand your courses and perform well in the university or school. If you want to get admitted in any of the top schools such as Harvard or Standford you need to have a good TOEFL score. For the top schools your score should be around 280 or more (if you have taken paper based TOEFL, then it should be 650 or more). To get admission in average category schools, a TOEFL score of abou t 133 (450 on the paper test) is enough.

It is a misconception that scoring in Paper based TOEFL is easier than Computer based TOEFL test. Your score depend on your proficiency in English. The TOEFL score is valid for only two years. In other words, two years after you take your TOEFL, your score will be deleted from the official TOEFL database, and TOEFL will not send you another report of your score. If you still have a copy of your original score, you can ask the university whether they will accept it, but most universities will not accept a copy from you; they require a score sent directly from TOEFL.
